Ochsenbraterei

The first thing you'll notice when you walk into this tent is the huge ox they have on a spit. If you go in the early part of the day, the ox has quite a bit of meat on it. It doesn't take long for the ox to be nothing but bones after a couple hours...then it's time to throw another ox up for the next round of Oktoberfest patrons.
Regarded as the best OX at Oktoberfest, it's a great place to have a meal.
Ochsenbraterei was created in 1881 and was purchased by the Spaten brewery almost 100 years later in 1980.
The feat of roasting an entire ox on a spit turned the Ochsenbraterei into a real attraction in itselft. Johann Rössler, the butcher who started the tradition, used his own specially designed roasting machine for many years. It was quite a spectacle, creating an enormous racket and belching clouds of smoke over the Fest. The machine consisted of two main parts: a “locomobile” mounted on four iron wheels, and a rotisserie with a revolving spit, an enclosure and a smokestack.
